Seaweed (Kelp if you’re fancy) has long been a delicacy in Asia for generations is now finally catching on here in the States and that’s a good thing for many different reasons.

Kelp from Maine getting ready for our Seaweed Marinara

Seaweed Marinara production

Kelp is considered to be one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet, packed with minerals, vitamins and antioxidants plus it contains five times more calcium than milk. In short, it’s good for you! It’s growing numbers with each harvest means a more sustainable crop for a warming planet and more business for the over two dozen lobstermen-and-women, who grow kelp during their off-seasons from lobster fishing.

There’s more local seaweed available in 2021 than ever before! For example, last year’s harvest saw 450,000 pounds vs 850,000 pounds this year and harvest is still going strong! HOLY MACKEREL!

This is why we created our Seaweed Marinara, a unique tomato sauce that highlights the flavors of the sea by combining fresh kelp with enoki mushrooms, garlic and miso.

It pairs fabulously with fish like linguine with clams, as a dip for calamari and squid, or baked cod. Not into fish? No worries, pair it with your favorite pasta shape and fresh parsley. One of my favorite things to pair our Seaweed Marinara with are mushrooms. Particularly Asian varieties like oyster, maitake or shiitake.

All the healthy and delicious green kelp we use for our Seaweed Marinara comes directly from sustainable ocean farmers working off the coast of Maine.

All this said, we’ll stick with what we here at the Saucery know very well and that’s sauce! Fresh seaweed pairs SEA-U-TIFULLY with fresh tomatoes. Marinara’s roots are actually from the sea. So, we’re bringing the sea(weed) back to the marinara, like literally!
