Recycled packaging material

Recycled packaging material

Despite what many think, zero waste is not time consuming, a passing trend or expensive. In fact, it’s pretty easy, has been around for centuries and is completely free. What’s required is just a little sensitivity towards the environment.

When we first ventured into the food manufacturing world, we were amazed at all the waste that’s involved with producing a food product. Packaging alone can be very wasteful depending on the materials being used.

So called meal prep services (and there are many these days) preaching the holy ‘zero food waste’ gospel are packing boxes for nationwide shipping with tons of wasteful materials. It’s great that you’re helping to reduce food waste by subscribing to these online services but let’s not lose sight of everything else that’s logistically connected to helping this so called zero food waste machine run. And don’t even get me started on sauces in plastic pouches. YIKES!

We ship products nationwide too, but we’re mindful of the packing materials we use for our sauce jars and these are heavy glass jars folks, not ketchup packets and carrots. For example, the corrugated cardboard cases we receive our raw materials in from suppliers get reused for transporting our finished product to Greenmarket year round and also reused for packing jars for nationwide shipping. Our online customers can attest to that.

We’ve almost considered using bubble wrap (recommended by FEDEX and UPS countless times), but I refuse seeing how it is such a wasteful, toxic material and we prefer to move forward with our zero waste philosophy by sticking with recycled paper and corn starch peanuts. And you know what? It’s fine. Craft paper works just fine. Cardboard works just fine. IT’S ALL FINE!

At the end of the day, we want you guys to enjoy the products we produce but we also want you to engage with us playing a part with zero waste too. This is another reason why we developed our recycling program with our jars. Return them at Greenmarket and get a discount on your next purchase with us. It’s a WIN-WIN-WIN! (this includes you, us and the environment).

Recycle your jars!

Hey look, if you want to keep our sauce jars for your own personal needs, that’s cool. Some of you have told me you use them to store grains, flour, sugar. I love hearing that because it means you’re reusing a very sustainable material. If you want to keep the jars and don’t know what to do with them; how about making homemade ice cream?

Check out this recipe from NY Times Amelia Nierenberg using our mason jar. It’s super easy (if you got the jar at home) and super fun! Make the recipe and just clean it out before returning it to us or keep it and make more ice cream at home.
